I Drove My Girlfriend’s Stepsister To College

Six Hours in the Car With Kenzie

Hanna can’t make the trip herself, so she asks her boyfriend to drive her stepsister Kenzie back to college. On paper it is a favor between adults: one long highway, one drop-off, no complications. Kenzie, an adult student with a plan of her own, has other ideas about how the ride should go.

The tension lives in the gap between the car and the phone. Hanna keeps calling to ask whether he is behaving, and he has to sound relaxed with Kenzie watching from the next seat. When the weather closes in and a single room is all that’s left, the drive stops being the problem for two grown adults.
