My Girlfriend’s Mom Read My Texts

A holiday weekend and 43 messages

The setting is a long holiday weekend at the lake house of Ethan’s girlfriend’s family. Ethan has sent his friends 43 messages about the one person he should never write about, her mother Jessie, and he is careless enough to leave the phone where she can find it.

What follows turns the usual fantasy around, because Jessie is not outraged. In the dialogue she reads his own texts back to him and asks whether he wants to take any of it back, and he says he meant every word. She then tests the line about doing anything she tells him, and mentions that her daughter Mia is headed down to the lake later. The hook is the dynamic: an adult woman holding all the cards and a man who put his confession in writing.
