Sworn to the Queen

A Guard Nobody Wanted, a Queen Who Dares

Kale is the guard nobody wanted, a low-born soldier in the Queensguard who is posted at her bedchamber door from the first night. She asks whether he knows why she chose him. He guesses his sword arm; she says it is because he holds her gaze.

The tension comes from a law with a loophole. Nobody may touch the queen, but nothing stops her from touching him, and she uses that gap to dare him. Every shift outside her door carries a death sentence, and five episodes keep her pushing while he works out what he can afford.
